Naturopathic Doctors Lobby for Healthcare Reform

spring-2009-lobby-day-flowers-026On Monday May 4th a group of approximately 100 naturopathic physicians, medical students and supporters of natural healthcare ventured to Capitol Hill to advocate on behalf of all those touched by dis-ease in this country longing for a new approach to healthcare.  We met with staff members from the offices of Senators and Congressmen/women throughout the day bringing the message to include an emphasis on prevention and wellness in any upcoming proposals for healthcare reform. The event which takes place annually was organized by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, an organization that works very hard to ensure that licensed naturopathic physicians and our patients have a voice in federal legislation.

I participated in meetings at the offices of Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski and Representative John Sarbanes (Maryland’s 3rd District). In both meetings our messages were well received. It was a great pleasure to join forces with my Maryland colleagues to represent both our current and future patients with the hopes that our efforts will increase awareness about naturopathic medicine on a state and national level.

Spring Detox Class at Seeds in Hampden

The cleansing energy of spring is a reminder to nurture and tend to our livers. The liver has the ever important task of filtering through all of the toxins that we encounter in our food and environment.

The term “detox” is often misused as a means of simply clearing out the digestive tract. Detoxification is rather a holistic process that recognizes all systems the body uses to release and reduce toxins – through the breath, digestion, skin and urinary tract.

The Spring Detox class is designed as a holistic approach to detoxification which will address diet and lifestyle factors that impact wellness. Each week will have a different focus:
Week 1: Love your Liver
Week 2: Healing the Gut
Week 3: Calming Down the Troops (lowering inflammation)
Week 4: Bringing it all Home – Detox in the Everyday

Each week different food groups will be eliminated from the diet to support the immune system and promote healing in the gastrointestinal tract.

Price of the class includes handouts, a rice-based protein powder which will enhance detox pathways in the liver, and an Anti-Inflammatory Cookbook.

Dates: Wednesdays April 29th, May 6th, 13th and 20th
Time: 7:00pm – 8:30pm
Location: Seeds Center for Whole Health
                        3600 Roland Ave Ste 4
                        Baltimore, MD 21211
To Register: Call Dr. Emily at (443) 226-7665
Class Limit: 10 participants (Minimum of 6 to hold the class)
Cost: $250 ($75 deposit required to hold your space)

More Reasons to Go GREEN!

The overarching theme of the Integrative Health Symposium held in New York City this past February was the healing power of “going green.” Brilliant minds in the fields of nutritional and environmental medicine repeated a similar message that may sound familiar from your childhood dinner table – “Eat Your Vegetables.” Yes, a very powerful medicine for preventing cancer and detoxifying your liver lives right in your refrigerator’s crisper drawer. Eating a heaping serving each day of green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale and chard can help up-regulate detoxification pathways in the liver that enhance your body’s ability to cope with day to day toxins and improve hormone metabolism. Foods rich in chlorophyll not only detoxify the body, but they also have anti-inflammatory action and support the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut.

Green Tea also deserves mention for its amazing ability to inhibit multiple steps of cancer growth and development. Drinking 8 or more 4-6 oz cups of green tea per day can have strong protective effects. Decaffeinated green tea will yield similar results.

Mark your calendars for BALTIMORE GREEN WEEK which kicks off with ECOFEST in Druid Hill Park Saturday April 18th 11am-5pm. Please visit the Great Soul Wellness Studio and Seeds Center for Whole Health tables and say hello!

Redefining Health -Tai Sophia Feb 7th & 8th

After hearing both Bob Duggan, MAc, MA and Dianne Connelly, PhD, MAc speak at separate integrative medicine conferences last year, I was truly inspired by both the depth and simplicity of their healing words. As founders of the Tai Sophia Institute in Laurel, MD, they share their message of healing with the greater community through their signature workshop “Refining Health” which will be held Saturday February 7th and Sunday February 8th at Tai Sophia. I am looking forward to finally attending this well-loved and respected program and I encourage anyone looking for a new way to view the world and yourself to consider registering.
